If your school is approaching the end of the 2nd quarter, then these functions in FastDirect might need to be addressed. Opening up teacher input for 2nd Quarter ReportCards will require:
- Changing input for 2nd mid-quarter report cards from ‘Allow Input’ to ‘Input Complete’ in ‘ReportCard Input Controls’
- Confirming the dates for 2nd quarter in ‘Grades’ then ‘Report Card Input Controls’
- Changing input for 2nd quarter ReportCards from ‘Not Yet’ to ‘Allow Input’ in ‘Report Card Input Controls’
- Having teachers go through the 2nd quarter report card input process
- Closing the input process by changing ‘Allow Input’ to ‘Input Complete’
With the winter season upon us, this could mean school closings and changes to school days due to inclement weather. If your school closes because of snow or other unexpected reasons, then you will need to change the day in the Main School (Standard) Calendar to a non-attendance day. If the calendar is not changed, then your teachers will be asked to take attendance for the day that was cancelled. Here are the steps:
- Go to ‘Calendar’ then scroll down to the gold box below the months
- The first option in the gold box allows you to select a day and determine what type of day it is – Normal, Holiday, Other etc.
- Select the month/day/year in the drop down, then select ‘Weather off’
- Click ‘Change type of day’
- Repeat these steps if your school was closed for additional days
- Please note – if you have teachers who are using separate attendance calendars, then you will need to change those as well! By placing a check mark next to the option ‘Copy to all Separate Attendance Calendars’ before you click the Change button, then the change you are making to the main attendance calendar will also be applied to the separate attendance calendars.
Notifying your parents of snow days, late starts or early dismissals has never been easier! To notify your staff and parents of any closings, late starts or early dismissals, use the FDbroadcast feature. These broadcasts can go directly from the school to the parents’ cell phones and email accounts, keeping everyone informed instantly!
FDbroadcast was designed to allow principals (and selected staff) the ability to message the school community in multiple methods in case of an emergency or urgent situation. The option “FDbroadcast” must be selected when sending the FDmail message. The system, by default, allows the Principal access to this feature. To give other staff members access, the Principal must edit their Teacher (Staff) form in the People section. This feature sends all users a copy of your urgent FDmail as well as a Text Notification and an Email Forward. Even if your school does not currently use the feature ‘Email Forward’, the FDbroadcast will still forward your FDmail message directly to the recipients’ email. However, in order for the text notification to work, your school will need to enable ‘SMS Text Notification’ in Settings.
The last critical step is that your parents have entered in all the necessary information on their parent form. This means they will need an email address, a cell phone number and a cell phone provider. A text notification and email forward are only sent if the appropriate fields are completed on the staff and parent forms. If a parent has opted out of receiving SMS Text Notifications or has opted out of receiving Staff Email Forward, an FDbroadcast will still be sent to that parent in all methods regardless of the parents’ preferences. This is why an FDbroadcast is ideal for urgent or emergency situations, as it overrides the parents’ preferences for communication.

The login screen is another way to communicate school closings and announcements from the school. Here are the steps for posting an announcement on the login screen:
- Go to ‘Settings’ and click on Login Page Design in the left hand navigation menu
- In the middle box labeled ‘Message of the Day’, type in your message or announcement
- Click ‘Save Changes’
- This announcement will post on the login screen above the login box. To add addition detail, color, font changes, etc, you will want to use an HTML editing software, such as KompoZer, which can be downloaded for free.

Since last summer, many of you have relied on our updated Text Messaging (SMS) notification system, powered by the Twilio API. This transition greatly improved delivery reliability compared to our previous email-to-text approach. Over the past several months, we have tracked data in order to understand the true ongoing cost and we’ve gained insight as to how we can continue providing this integration by implementing a sustainable integration fee structure. We have also developed the necessary usage tracking report and administrative settings to help schools review and manage message volume.
What’s Changing
- SMS pricing begins January 1, 2026
- August – December 2025: No SMS fees will be charged
- By January 16, 2026 –
- Confirm whether your school will use SMS or schools may opt out of SMS entirely
- Confirm your Billing manager’s email address
Clear & Predictable Pricing
To keep the Text feature sustainable while giving schools full control over usage, FastDirect will move to the following model:
Base Access Fee — $15 per month
The base fee activates the Text Notification feature for your school and includes:
- The first 1000 text messages each month
- Access to FastDirect’s SMS delivery infrastructure
- Usage tracking
- Ongoing system support
All schools using SMS pay the base fee. Higher-volume usage is billed proportionally, so schools only pay for what they use. School leadership can use settings to manage this service.
Usage Rate — $0.015 per text segment
Text messages beyond the Base plan are billed at a flat, transparent rate. This usage-based approach helps keep costs fair and aligned with actual messaging needs.
| Amount of Text Volume | Monthly Text Segments | Base Fee | Usage Charges | Estimated Monthly Total |
| Lower | 800 | $15 | $0 | $15 |
| Median | 1,200 | $15 | ~$3 | $18 |
| Average | 2,800 | $15 | ~$27 | $42 |
| Heavy User | 15,000 | $15 | ~$210 | $225 |
- Schools with low to median text volume typically fall below $25/month
- Average text volume typically fall between $30-50/month
- Heavy usage is billed proportionally and reflects true system cost.
How To Control Usage
Review Usage and Select Delivery Methods:
Three Text Delivery Methods:
1. FDbroadcast – Administrative texts for urgent or time-sensitive messages
- Principals and permissioned staff can send broadcast texts.
- This is typically where schools have the greatest control over usage and volume.
2. Text Forwarding for Staff
- Staff may choose to send a text notification while composing an FDMail message.
3. Auto-Text for Parents
- Parents receive a text alert for every FDmail message
- This can greatly increase message volume
(Settings → FDMail → Text Usage).
- Monthly invoices will be emailed via Quickbooks
- Prepayment options are available for budget predictability

After the start of the 3rd quarter, principals have the ability to allow individual teachers to edit report card grades for the entire year without having to ‘allow input’ for a specific grading period or without having to ‘allow input’ for the whole school. Once a principal has given permission to a specific teacher to edit report card grades for the entire year, then that teacher will need to follow these steps:
- Go to ‘Grades’
- In the first drop down inside the gray box at the top, choose the course that has report card grades that need to be edited
- Click the large yellow button that reads ‘You are temporarily allowed to edit Report Card grades for the whole year’
- You will now see the list of students in that course and their report card grades
- Click ‘Edit’ next to the student whose grade you would like to change
- Enter in a grade or change an existing grade for that student, then click ‘Update’
- Repeat these steps for any additional student grades or courses

The ‘Forgot my Screen Name and Password’ recovery process for logging into your parent account is easy as long as your email address is up-to-date and accurate in FastDirect. If you need your screen name or password, please make sure your email address is accurate and matches what you have in your FastDirect parent account. To view and edit your information, you will need to log in to your account (how you would have before the app) and click ‘Display Parent Data’ at the top of your Home page.
Your school may limit the amount of information you are able to edit. If there is a change to your contact information and you are unable to edit it, please contact the school’s office so that they can make the necessary changes. While you are viewing your personal information, take a look at some of the options that may be available to you, such as adding a cell phone number, enabling email forwarding, text and email notifications or withholding your contact information from being published to buzz books.
